Abstracts:

Mechanical oscillators, widely regarded as precision sensors of mass and force, have now entered the quantum frontier. Advances in control and measurement have enabled these devices to reach their motional ground state and interact coherently with other quantum platforms, transforming them into novel quantum resources. In this colloquium, I describe the principles and possibilities of mechanical quantum oscillators, based on examples from microwave cavity optomechanics. By harnessing quantum fluctuations, these experiments reveal new ways of controlling motion at the quantum limit. Beyond their fundamental interest, mechanical quantum oscillators present pathways toward ultra-sensitive quantum sensors and universal transducers that can link otherwise incompatible quantum systems. These developments highlight how mechanical devices may become central building blocks in the emerging landscape of quantum science and technology.
