Requirements Per Fields
1. Students enrolled in the masters degree program are required to complete a total of 15 course credits, of which 12 come from the required core courses of PHYS-501: Classical Mechanics (3 credits, PHYS-503: Electromagnetic Theory (3 credits), PHYS-505: Quantum Mechanics I (3 credits), and PHYS-502: Mathematical Physics or PHYS-508: Experimental Physics (3 credits). The final three credits must come from advanced course work in the students area of specialization [e.g. PHYS-601, 611, 621, 631, 641, or 651]. Students majoring in quantum optics may take PHYS-635: Applied Optics I in lieu of PHYS-631: Quantum Optics I, and students specializing in nonlinear dynamics and biophysics have the option of taking PHYS-661: Biophysics I in place of PHYS-651: Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos I.
2. Students in the doctoral program should complete the course work required for the masters degree (15 credits) and, in addition, PHYS-504: Classical Electromagnetic Theory II (3 credits), PHYS-506: Quantum Mechanics II (3 credits). Furthermore, the doctoral program requires six credit hours of advanced coursework in the students area of specialization. Up to 12 additional credits may be obtained from semester courses.
3. Candidates may apply for the unified masters/doctoral degree program. The applicant must specify their intention to join this program when they apply for admission to the department, or during the second semester of their masters degree. The number of candidates for this program will be determined based on the total number of Ph.D. applications received by the department. Graduate students admitted to the unified masters/doctoral program after completion of two semesters towards the masters degree will continue their studies toward the doctoral degree without writing the masters thesis. The total number of years for course work cannot exceed 4 years, and the students total accumulated time in the graduate program is limited to 9 years. The unified degree requires 54 credits, of which 12 may come from semester courses. Students wishing to exit the unified program with only the masters degree must fulfill all of the requirements for the masters degree, including the masters thesis.
4. Supplemental Requirements
• Admitted students whose undergraduate major is not the physics major should take the necessary prerequisite courses. Credit for these courses may be given if the student has taken, and passed, the equivalent class at their previous university.
• Graduate students can take take courses from other departments. However, the physics department limits the number of credits applicable to the students degree to six course credits.
• The above listed degree requirements are applied to all students whom has entered the physics department in 2010 or later.

1. Masters Program: The candidate is expected to pass the comprehensive exam covering the three main core subjects of Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic theory I, and Quantum Mechanics I.
2. Doctoral and Unified Degree Programs: The candidate is expected to pass the comprehensive exam covering three core subjects (Classical Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory I &II, and Quantum Mechanics I &II), and one major subject in their chosen degree field.
