Abstract:
The luminescent properties of rare-earth (RE) ions have been actively utilized in various optoelectronic applications. These properties can be incorporated into functional oxides without altering their intrinsic characteristics. The high sensitivity of f-f transitions to the local lattice environment surrounding doped RE ions makes their emission profiles valuable for probing lattice distortions.

In defect states introduced by RE ion doping, electrons and holes can become trapped and detrapped, giving rise to novel optical phenomena such as photochromism and persistent luminescence. Recently, long-persistent luminescence (LPL) has been explored for emulating synaptic behavior in neuromorphic computing. In this talk, I will present several studies on the intriguing luminescent properties of RE ion-doped oxides and discuss the potential of LPL for synaptic functionality in neuromorphic computing.
