Abstract:
This colloquium introduces the theoretical advancements in stochastic thermodynamics that have emerged since the late 1990s. The reformulation of thermodynamics in terms of a stochastic trajectory has led to a renaissance in the field, resulting in the generalization of the thermodynamic second law to fluctuation theorems (FT) through the definition of stochastic entropy.
This theoretical framework has extended thermodynamics to encompass general nonequilibrium processes. More recently, a new wave of studies has investigated fundamental thermodynamic inequalities beyond the thermodynamic second law, leading to the discovery of thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TUR) and thermodynamic speed limit (TSL), which are tradeoff relations associated with thermodynamic cost. These FT and tradeoff relations represent major pillars of stochastic thermodynamics. This colloquium aims to present the basic concepts of stochastic entropy production and the significance of these major theories.
